Behavioral Health 2.0: a new investment frontier

7. August 2025

Capital shifts toward high-acuity behavioral health as complex care models scale.

Behavioral Health 2.0

With mental health challenges growing in scale and complexity, investor focus is shifting from expanding access to addressing acuity. After a decade of innovation targeting low- to moderate-severity conditions, the next evolution aims to serve patients with complex, high-acuity behavioral health needs.

In a recent insight, Adams Street Partners introduces the concept of Behavioral Health 2.0—a new wave of full-stack platforms designed to deliver integrated, team-based care to the most vulnerable populations. These models emphasize measurable outcomes, real-time clinical oversight, and reimbursement aligned with value-based care delivery.

“We believe the next wave of behavioral health innovation will be defined by platforms that can measurably improve outcomes for the highest need patients at scale,” says Thomas Bremner, Partner in the Growth Equity Team of Adams Street.

One compelling case the insight mentions is Equip, a virtual treatment provider for eating disorders. By deploying a coordinated five-person care team, Equip has demonstrated a 50% symptom reduction in five months and helped 81% of patients reach or maintain target weight within a year—across all 50 U.S. states.

“We believe the next generation of winners will be those that can manage the complexity of care while demonstrating value at scale,” Bremner adds.
